World Autism Awareness Day, AGWO’s contribution towards a better society

World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is a significant day observed globally to raise awareness about autism, which is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects people’s social interaction and communication skills. This day offers an opportunity to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals with autism. On this day, people come together to educate others about autism and support those who are living with it.

Why is World Autism Awareness Day important?

We celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on 2nd April. This global event aims to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By raising awareness about the challenges faced by people with autism and their families, we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for them.

What is autism?

Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition. It impacts social interaction, communication, and patterns of behavior. People with autism may experience difficulties in understanding and expressing emotions, forming relationships, and adapting to changes in their environment.

Why we celebrate World Autism  Awareness Day

  • Raise awareness. World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
  • Promote understanding. By celebrating this day, we aim to promote a better understanding of autism, dispel myths and misconceptions, and foster empathy towards those affected by ASD.
  • Encourage inclusion. The event highlights the importance of creating inclusive societies where individuals with autism can thrive, participate, and contribute without facing barriers or stigma.
  • Support families and caregivers. World Autism Awareness Day raises awareness of the challenges faced by families and caregivers of individuals with autism and highlights the need for support systems and resources.
  • Advocate for research. Encouraging research into prevention and intervention for autism spectrum disorder benefits those living with it.
  • Emphasizing early intervention and raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and intervention can help ensure that children with autism receive the necessary support to reach their full potential.

Statistics related to autism on a global scale?

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects about 1% of the global population, which is equivalent to over 75 million people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • The CDC’s latest research in 2023 shows an increase in autism diagnoses from 1 in 44 children to 1 in 36.

India’s stats

  • According to a 2021 study published in the Indian Journal of Paediatrics, the estimated prevalence of autism in India is approximately 1 in 68 children.

What challenges do people with autism face?

Social communication barriers Individuals with autism often struggle with social communication, which makes it difficult for them to form and maintain relationships, understand social cues and navigate complex social situations.

Sensory sensitivities Autistic individuals are sensitive to torch, light, and sound. This can make navigating everyday environments challenging and overwhelming.

Limited understanding and acceptance A lack of awareness and understanding about autism can lead to stigma, prejudice, and social exclusion for those affected by the condition.

Educational challenges Children with autism may require specialized educational support, and availability and quality. Leading to disparities in educational outcomes.

Financial and support strains, families of individuals with autism often face significant financial burdens due to the cost of therapies. Accommodations, and specialized services, which can be challenging to access or afford.

What are we doing as AGWO, a non-profit organization in India, to tackle these issues?

We are a non-profit organization that advocates for equality for all individuals, irrespective of their background. Our organization is committed to supporting less fortunate individuals by providing them with equal rights, treatment, and resources. As an NGO, we offer support to children with autism and their families. We consider them a part of our own family.

  • The AGWO organization aims to offer quality education and free study materials to children who are affected by autism.  Aspire to build a better future. We understand that it can be challenging for families to manage both medical treatments and education. Therefore, we strive to support them in this journey by providing them with the necessary resources and tools.
  • We provide nutritious meals to individuals to support their physical and mental well-being. We understand that families with children who have autism often face high expenses. Related to medical treatments and may have already depleted their savings. Providing healthy meals can be a challenge.  We believe it’s important to alleviate this burden by offering support for three meals a day.
  • The organization provides medical treatment. Facilities, and medicines to support those in need and ensure they never feel alone or helpless.
  • Mental support can be a significant help for individuals who are less fortunate. We, as an NGO, try our best to provide a good environment and mental support to children and their families. Which can help them find peace and calm their disturbed minds.

Conclusion

World Autism Awareness Day is an influential platform that helps raise awareness about autism and promotes understanding. As an NGO, we support this day and aim to assist individuals who are affected by this condition. The AGWO is dedicated to creating a world where every individual with special needs has equal rights and resources.
